Cher van Schouwen: Emergence
Internationally exhibited artist Cher van Schouwen brings her bold and emotionally charged artistic voice to Gallery 360 this November with her powerful new solo exhibition: Emergence.
Running from 7–27 November, the exhibition is a vibrant celebration of creativity, colour, community, and a deeply personal act of giving back with much gratitude.
Known for her expressive portraits, spirited horses, whimsical florals, and richly textured still life, Cher’s work pulses with passion and an unshakable belief in the beauty of life. In Emergence, she unveils a striking new direction — with a surprising number of Australian landscapes making their way onto the canvas. The result: bold, textured, and emotionally resonant works that invite viewers into moments of both quiet reflection and dynamic energy.
“This collection is about everything I love: courage, curiosity, colour, connection, family, femininity, nature, rhythm, soul — and PASSION for it all.”
— Cher van Schouwen
This exhibition is more than a visual experience. It is deeply personal, interwoven with poetry, storytelling, and moments of transformation. One of the most intimate works is a portrait of a radiant ‘All Australian’ girl taking a quiet moment to herself, simply feeling the sun on her skin — born from a retreat on the Greek island of Kastellorizo, a private moment just slowing down and breathing out, after decades of family commitment and hard work.
After exhibiting in South Africa, the UK, the US, and across Australia, and teaching art in Perth for over 15 years, Cher took a full year off to bring Emergence to life — painting more than 25 original works she describes as her most authentic collection yet.
“Some canvases were recycled. Some paintings emerged from nothing planned. Some brushstrokes said more than I ever could in words.”
Despite the shift into full-time painting, Cher continues to teach select weekly art classes, creating spaces where creativity, conversation, and connection flourish.
“I’ll never forget a doctor walking into one of our early collectives after a long day in emergency. She stood there watching us paint — and just cried. That moment stayed with me. Art heals. It connects. It brings us back to ourselves.”
After 33 years in the art world and two full cycles of seven-year transformations, Emergence marks a new chapter — “a celebration of courage, creativity , and a coming home to myself”
